Hiatus

Hey All,

Sorry for the lack of posting, I've been extremely busy with work and other things. I will, however, be firing things back up as we approach the upcoming season (which is a mere two months away). Until then, enjoy the summer and I'll see you soon!

Cheers,
Alex

Draft Info

Hi Everyone,

I'm leaving for Europe tomorrow for work and will be there until next Monday. Sadly, I won't be able to cover the draft as intently as I had hoped. I'll try and tweet/blog reactions to draft picks as I get the news, but I don't know how busy my work schedule will be...hopefully I'll be able to post some fun things tho here and there.

Stay tuned and enjoy the 2010 NFL Draft!

Marshall to Miami

NEWS:
Denver Broncos trade WR Brandon Marshall to Miami Dolphins for two second round picks - one this year, one next year. Dolphins give him a contract extension worth $47.5 Million.

VERY QUICK REACTION:
Plain and simple - Miami has one less thing to worry about. Marshall is a big play/go-to receiver, regardless of off-season problems. Denver, on the other hand, now has one more thing to look for, and one more question mark on the list - not the best notion for a team that's already searching for several answers heading into the season...

Holmes to the Jets

NEWS:
Steelers "dump" Santonio Holmes to Jets for a fifth round pick.

QUICK REACTION:
Wow. Despite some off-field issues and a pending suspension, this move was a shocker. I understand that the Steelers are dealing with team image and personnel problems, but giving away a talented receiver in Holmes might be a step in the wrong direction. With the looming threat of more Roethlisberger problems, I'm surprised the Steelers are willing to lose any established receivers which could help out budding QB Dennis Dixon.

Regardless of what the Steelers organization is thinking, the New York Jets are looking at a significantly improved team in 2010. Even with a four game suspension for Holmes heading into the season, "elite" begins to sum up my thoughts of the Jets as well as a clear favorite for not only their devision, but for the conference and, yeah, maybe even the Super Bowl...just throwing that out there.

Mr. McNabb goes to Washington

NEWS:

REACTION:
I'm pretty surprised that Washington, of all teams, came out of the pile with possession. I figured one of the other teams, mainly Oakland, would be the new home for McNabb. I was confident he'd be traded before the Draft with the buzz that the Eagles really were searching for more picks. But when I read the news of this trade, I realized how smart the Redskins are for making this move, and how it actually makes perfect sense for both teams.

The Redskins have been looking for a spark to get their team on track again. It failed with the return of Joe Gibbs, it failed with Jim Zorn. But now Mike Shanahan's in the picture, and with him: a seasoned Quarterback, not an unproven rookie, but someone we all know can hack it. McNabb brings experience, excitement and, most of all, confidence to the struggling Skins. It seemed that D.C. had a very hard time wrapping their heads around Jason Campbell (who might be hitting the road after this), but I'm sure the team can get behind McNabb and focus on a bright future, instead of wallowing in the troubles of the recent past.

McNabb is not the final solution for Washington, but it's certainly a ray of hope. I'm still expecting them to draft a young quarterback early who can start fresh and learn from McNabb, but maybe they'll wait until later in the draft (maybe not though as they have no 2nd or 3rd round picks). But the bottom line is the Skins can feel better knowing that they have a quarterback they can believe in. And if you look at the top teams in the league, having that means everything.

As for the Eagles, they can look toward their future. Kevin Kolb, come on down! He has proven he can win and the team is officially in his hands. Now it's time to see if he can succeed where McNabb has failed and take the Eagles to the Super Bowl. No easy task...

Did I mention I was excited for the upcoming season?

April News

NEWS:
Jacksonville Jaguars announce move to Los Angeles...

Eagles trade Donovan McNabb to Buffalo Bills for undisclosed draft picks...

New England Patriots fire Bill Belichick...

REACTION:
Unbelievable announcements from these teams. I'm almost in shock with where to begin. Jacksonville moving to Los Angeles I can believe, but it seems downright absurd that the Patriots would fire their "genius". And as for McNabb, I'm sure bills fans everywhere will be thrilled to see him in blue and red.

April Fools? Actually it's too bad none of it's true...but hey, we can dream can't we?

Happy April Fools Day Everyone!

New OT Rules

NEWS:
The NFL voted for a change in the playoff overtime rules. It passed. Now during tied playoff games, if the winner of the overtime coin toss scores a field goal, the other team has a chance to tie it with a field goal, or win with a touchdown. If the team ties it again with a field goal, the next team to score wins.

REACTION:
REALLY!?!?! Well I feel bad for all the field goal kickers out there, your job just became that much more meaningless, especially if this rule change extends to the regular season (which it could if votes pass in May).

For all you wannabe kickers out there, there's two ways to look at this change. One, it will force teams to try and win before regulation ends, eliminating overtime games almost all together making clutch kickers more valuable. Or two, kickers will become semi-obsolete because everyone will be trying to go for six at all costs to prevent any further gameplay, which could end up resulting in just more time spent slinging the ball all over the field, making that hard-to-come-by star quarterback all the more invaluable.

Will it make the game more exciting? Maybe, but I think the bottom line is that the NFL is forgetting one major part of the game...there are two sides of the ball, offense AND defense. If your team can't stop the other team from scoring regardless of a coin toss, I'm not sure you're good enough to continue on in the playoffs. Or I'm mistaken and maybe defenses are more of the focus in this new rule change. If your team can score the first FG, then it becomes the defenses job to stop the other team...hmm. So defense can still win football games, wow.

But hey, with names like Manning, Brees, and Favre making the headlines, who cares about top ranked defenders like...who's his face and....what's his name...Jay Lewis? And people wonder why we have a pass happy league now...But then I'm reminded of the most recent Super Bowl, the top two offenses  set to battle it out, and how was it decided? A crucial interception TD return? Hmm...
